Atherton is a medium sized town located in northern Queensland, located in what is known as the Tablelands area. It is located about 80 km's inland from the ocean and has an approximate population of 8,200 people.
It is located about 1,715 km's north of Brisbane, which should take about 20 - 21 hours to drive, if you don't make any long stops along the way, or two days if you stop over for a night.
It is about 80 km's south of the popular destination of Cairns, but it will take about 1.5 hours to drive due to the windy roads. Many people who want to do fruit picking in Cairns end up working in Atherton instead when they cannot find any work close to Cairns.
Its postcode is 4883, which makes it an area eligible for backpackers and people wanting to come and work and travel Australia to extend their Working Holiday Visa to an Extended Working Holiday Visa.
Atherton is known for growing avocados, bananas, custard apples and a range of vegetables.
From March to June you shouldn't have much problem finding work either with the avocado or custard apple crops. Depending on the weather that year it may be possible to find work all year long in the banana plantations, and October to December is great for finding work in the vegetable fields.
However, severe tropical weather, including flash flooding and cyclones, can have an devastating impact on the season. One cyclone can wipe out entire crops. Make sure you check if there is work in the area before heading there.
Generally lots of work. There may be work. Generally no work.
