Emerald is a large inland outback country town (some people call it a city) with an approximate population of 13,000. It is located in the top of the southern half of Queensland.

It is located about 900 km's from Brisbane, which should take about 11 hours to drive, if you don't make any long stops along the way. Cairns is about 960 km away, which will take about 11 - 12 hours to drive.

Mackay, the gateway to the Whitsunday Island is about 400 kms away, and that drive should take about 4.5 - 5 hours to complete. Rockhampton is about 270 kms away, that drive takes about 3.5 hours to complete.

You can also find direct flights to Emerald from both Brisbane and Cairns running on a regular basis.

Its postcode is 4671, which makes it an area eligible for backpackers and people wanting to come and work and travel Australia to extend their Working Holiday Visa to an Extended Working Holiday Visa.

Best time to find fruit picking work in Emerald

There are large cotton fields in the area, and they are often looking for many pickers in April to May.

However, picking cotton is very hard work. If you are looking for something else I recommend coming in September to October for the melon picking, or November to December for the grape harvest.

There is no work to be found January to February. However, depending on the season, you may be able to find work in most other months, but I highly recommend you organise a job before going, otherwise you may find there is no work for you.

Where to stay in Emerald

Due to its relatively large size there are hotels, motels, caravan and cabin parks, and backpacker hostels located in the town.

A number of farms also provide farm stays, so bring your camping gear you may be able to camp on your farm. However, you should organise this before starting your job. Not all farms will have places, and those that do often only have a limited number available.
