Fruit picking Katherine

Katherine is a medium sized outback country town located about 320 km's south of Darwin, which takes about 3.5 hours to drive, and it has an approximate population of 6,000. It is an isolated town with not too much else around. In fact, the next closest capital city is Adelaide, over 2,700 km's away!

Any eligible work done anywhere in the Northern Territory allows for backpackers and people wanting to come and work and travel Australia to extend their Working Holiday Visa to an Extended Working Holiday Visa. So you can be safe in the knowledge that you can get your extended visa should you do any fruit picking, harvest or farm work work in or around Katherine.

Best time to find fruit picking work in Katherine

If you don't mind working during the tropical "monsoon build-up" months (where humidity levels are at their highest, but the wet season and the rains have not yet arrived) you can always find work picking mangoes in October through to December. I warn you, this is hard work. During the build-up months you sweat when sitting in the shade doing nothing!

Getting into a humid mango swap and picking large fruit all day long is a challenge even for the fittest of people. But if you can handle it you can make a lot of money as many farms are desperate for workers, especially in November.

During all other parts of the year I highly recommend you try to source work before going to Katherine. If you go an just expect to be able to find work you may be in for a shock. It is true that you may find work, but don't expect it.
