Stanthorpe is a smallish outback town located in the south east Queensland. It has an approximate population of 5,500.

The town lies on the New England Highway near the New South Wales border. It is 60 km's south of Warwick and 56 km's north of Tenterfield.

It is about 1,000 metres above sea level and is the coldest place in all of Queensland, so be prepared and bring some warm clothes, it can get chilly even during the summer months.

It is located about 220 km's from Brisbane, which would take you about 2.5 - 3 hours to drive, and about 720 km's from Sydney, which would take you about 8.5 hours to drive.

How to get to Stanthorpe

If you've found a job and need to get to Stanthorpe your options are a little limited. There are no direct flights from any of the major airline companies of Australia, but there are a number of different public transport connections.

Once you get to Stanthorpe there are no public transport in the area, so your own transport is valuable. Some accommodation places do provide transport for a fee to farms out of town, but you should really check it before you arrive if you don't have your own car or camper van.

If you are coming from Brisbane you can either drive, it is only 220 kms and it is going to take about 2.5 - 3 hours to get there.

What to do in Stanthorpe

If you are a nature lover you are in for a treat. Stanthorpe is part of the Granite Belt, so named for the remarkable landscape of protruding granite. National Parks including Girraween, Sundown, Bald Rock and Boonoo Boonoo are all located close by. There are lots of opportunities for camping, bush walking, scenic views and getting out into the Australian nature.

There are more than 50 wineries, so if you are a wine enthusiast you can sample some of the superb local varieties.

There is also an art gallery and the Stanthorpe museum.
