Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria, has an approximate population of 4.1 million people, making it the second largest city in Australia, smaller than only Sydney.

It is larger than many other cities from around the world including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Paris, Berlin, and Madrid, and is larger than every single city in the USA with the exception of New York and every UK city except London. In total 5.5 million people live in Victoria, meaning about 75% of all Victorians live in Melbourne.

When people think of capital cities of Australia, most people instantly think of Sydney. However, Melbourne is undoubtedly Australia's cultural capital. It is host to some amazing Victorian-era architecture, world renowned music & arts centres, the Southern Hemisphere's largest museum, it was the seat of Australian federal politics until the creation of the Australian Capital Territory & Canberra, it is considered the music hub of the nation, and it has a huge number of sporting arenas, international events, and world renowned festivals.

Some of the many reasons that people decide to visit Melbourne include:

  • Attending international sporting events
  • Using it as a base to explore Victoria's natural wonders
  • Attending local & international events & festivals
  • Studying at university
  • Exploring Melbourne's amazing shopping, restaurants, cafes & laneways
  • It has twice been voted the most liveable city in the world
  • And much more...

So what is it that makes this city so appealing to both Australians and international visitors? Is it its vibrant multi cultural aspects, the melting pot of a vast number of international events and festivals, is it the vast tracks of parkland that litter the inner city suburbs, the beautiful vista of the Yarra river as it winds its way through the city centre, or something else? It is hard to put your finger on exactly what it is, but almost everyone agrees that Melbourne is a city that enchants and captivates you from the minute you start exploring it.

Many backpackers enjoy Melbourne for other reasons, such as its vibrant night life, it is relaxed pace, its bohemian feel, amazing music venues, concerts, and events, relaxing in the local parks & gardens, taking the Ramsay Street & Neighbours Tour (for those of you from the UK) and many other reasons.
