Map of where Coober Pedy and Ceduna is in South Australia

It is a big state, and it is also Australia's driest state or territory. The top two thirds of the state is virtually all desert. Although all of the lower third of the state is also very hot and dry, along the coast the weather can be cooler than in the north.

The central inland opal mining town of Coober Pedy gives a very good indication of what to expect in the northern parts of South Australia.

The town of Ceduna, which is located to the south and on the coast, gives a pretty good idea of what to expect from south western parts of the state.

Average Temperatures of northern South Australia (Coober Pedy):

This part of the state has a weather pattern that imitates the monsoonal tropics, with a wet season and a dry season.

The wet season months are the hottest, and also the wettest, with nightly average temperatures a sweltering 20+°C. Although, as you can see in the table below the wet months are not very wet. The dry season by comparison is much cooler, and you will find many more tourists during this part of the year.

Most people head through the northern parts of the state on their way to Alice Spring / Uluru (Ayers Rock). If you are making this drive I recommend you stop overnight at Coober Pedy.

  • - If you don't like it really hot, come in April - May or August - September, when the weather is fair, and rain fall is minimal.
  • - If you like things a bit cooler, come during the winter months of June or July, but beware, this is peak season for inland outback Australia, there will be many people at all the popular tourist destinations!

Average Temperatures of south western South Australia (Ceduna):

Southern SA has the standard four season climate (summer, autumn, winter and spring), with the winter months being the coldest and wettest.

Note: South Australia is a big place. While this page gives a quick guide as to what to expect in certain areas, it is always a very good idea to check the local weather forecast before heading somewhere new. Australia is a land of extremes with anything ranging from bushfires to flash flooding. While the chances of these are minimal, it pays to be safe!
