Sydney is the capital city of New South Wales, and has an approximate population of 4.5 million people, making it the largest city in Australia, although Melbourne is a close second with 4.1 million people.

It is larger than many other cities from around the world such as Johannesburg & Cape Town, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and is larger than every single American city with the exception of New York and every UK city except London. In total, 7.2 million people live in New South Wales, meaning about 62% of the population live in the capital city.

When people think of Australia, most instantly think of either Uluru or Sydney. And for good reasons. This city truly is the glitz and glamour capital of Australia. With one of the world's most beautiful harbours and the best known Opera House, it has a lot to live up to. The harbour is dotted with chic cafes and restaurants overlooking the stunning views. However, the many areas of natural parkland around only help to increase the sense of beauty and tranquillity. But there is much more to this city than just its harbour and views.

Some of the many reasons that people decide to visit include:

  • Attending international events & festivals
  • Using it as a base to explore New South Wales natural wonders
  • Studying at university
  • Its city beaches (Manley and Bondi) for swimming and surfing
  • The local parks and garden
  • Let's face it, many people just like to say they've seen it!
  • And much more...

You can divide the city centre into 6 areas: City Centre (home to many famous attractions, fine restaurants, and shopping), The Rocks (includes the first colonial village of Sydney and the iconic Harbour Bridge), Darling Harbour (an extensive leisure and entertainment area with restaurants, boardwalks, aquariums, wildlife, and museums), City South (home to markets, cafes, Chinese culture and cuisine, and some cheaper accommodation and shopping), City East (has a busy nightlife, and coffee shops, fashion and entertainment by day), and City West (the fish markets, maritime pubs and the Star Casino).

It is also one of the most multi cultural cities anywhere in the world. If you like international foods and cultures, you will love exploring Sydney. It has anything and everything from Asian, African, Middle Eastern, the Sub Continent (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and friends), European, South American and more. It is a true smorgasbord and buffet of international food, festivals, events, music, and more!

So what is it that makes this city so appealing to both Australians and international visitors? Is it the many multi cultural aspects, the climate, the huge amounts of international events and festivals, is it the vast tracks of parkland that litter the inner city suburbs, the beautiful vista of the Harbour, or something else? It is hard to say exactly what it is, but almost everyone agrees that it is a city that enchants and captivates you from the minute you start exploring it.
