Welcome to the coming to Australia checklist! Here I have a list (and links where appropriate) to the most important things you need to consider and pack when planning your holiday to Australia.

Just work your way through the list below, and you'll find that in no time at all you'll have all the resources to plan, and pack, for your trip to Australia.

Hint! At the very bottom of this page you will find a link to the Premium Edition checklist. It is 100% free to use, you can make notes, check and uncheck items as you complete a task, add your own items, and best of all, you can save it and come back at any time and pick up where you left off. It really doesn't get any easier than this!

1. Your visa

One of the very first things you need to consider is what type of visa you want to apply for. Unlike many countries, especially European countries, you need a visa to enter Australia under any condition, even for a short holiday.

If you are considering backpacking around Australia for more than 3 months, you should have a look at these links:

Holiday, business, and other visa types

For all you other visa options please make a selection from the main Australian Visas page.

2. Travel Insurance

Never leave home without it! I cannot stress this point enough.

At the bare minimum you need to get travel health insurance. But I recommend you also get other optional extras like loss/theft, cancelled bookings, etc.

If you want some more details about what you should consider when taking out a policy (for example, how to find a quality insurance provider, tips on how to not get ripped off, what you should get covered, etc) have a look at the Travel insurance for Australia

3. Flights and Accommodation

Once you have your visa applied for and granted, and you have sorted out your travel insurance, the next thing you need to consider is your flight to Australia AND your first night/s of accommodation.

With regards to finding flights, I will leave that to you and your favourite search engine or travel agency. But, you MUST book your first night/s accommodation in Australia.

Just imagine doing a 24 - 30 hour transit only to arrive and find out that due to some big event all the hotels and hostels are booked out! Do NOT become homeless on your first day in Australia!!!

For all your accommodation needs just follow the link to the capital city you will be arriving in:

4. Documents to leave at home

Many people forget this item, but it is very important. You MUST leave a certified copy of your passport and identification (for example, your driver's licence) at home with a trusted person, ideally a family member.

Unless you have been through the trouble before, you have no idea how hard it is to get a replacement passport in a foreign country if you cannot prove who you are! By leaving a copy of important documents at home you can get them faxed over should you either loose you passport, or in the worst case scenario, it gets stolen.

Another good reason for considering travel insurance is that it will cover these costs should you become parted with your passport in Australia. So, don't forget to have a look at the Travel Insurance for Australia page!

5. Toiletries and miscellaneous items

Some other very handy items you should consider include:

  • A Swiss Army Knife: You have no idea how many times this will come in handy!
  • Plastic Flip-Flops: Keep your feet clean in hostel showers! Don't wait until you get here to buy some!
  • Small First Aid Kit: It is amazing how many cuts and bruises you get when backpacking for a year or more!
  • Small portable torch: There's no bedside lamps in hostels! You'll be amazed how often this comes in handy!

6. You still want more???

Do you want even more great ideas and items that you simply MUST bring if you want to make the most of your time in Australia? Here is a little teaser just to get you interested... have you considered a universal charger with a USB adaptor? Or a water proof and shock proof camera? You want to go the Great Barrier Reef right? And you want to take some underwater photos while you're there? Then you need this camera. To find out more, click the link below!
